We are most interested in proposals focused on proving the technical feasibility of an innovation for achieving the targeted use for the recycled material. We are unlikely to fund proposals to incinerate the reclaimed materials but might be interested in those that convert the material into new or synthetic fuels. We are unlikely to fund projects to further develop research topics already receiving funding or that focus on existing uses of reclaimed mattress materials. Sign Up Rhode Island State Impact How to Recycle Public Documents Resources Contact Strengthening Rhode Island’s Environment One Mattress at a Time The Mattress Recycling Council’s Bye Bye Mattress program is an example of Rhode Island’s environmental leadership and commitment to sustainability. more than 875,000 mattresses collected since 2016 more than 15,000 tons of material recycled since 2016 nearly every town and 230 other entities participate Review our 10-Year Impact Report Offering Convenient and No-Cost Recycling Bye Bye Mattress is accessible throughout Rhode Island, offering no-cost opportunities for residents and businesses to discard their used mattresses. Mattresses are collected through a variety of channels. Residents in 37 of 39 Rhode Island municipalities can drop off their mattresses at their local transfer station, public works yard or collection event. There are also two public drop-off locations available to all state residents. Some municipal curbside pickup programs divert mattresses to the program’s recyclers too. In addition, 220 other public and private entities across Rhode Island participate in the program including mattress retailers, hotels, universities, junk haulers and apartment complexes. 39 drop-off locations 3 recycling facilities serve Rhode Island 3 towns hold seasonal collection events each year On the Ground in Rhode Island Raising Awareness and Educating Consumers MRC raises awareness of the value of mattress recycling in Rhode Island. MRC has implemented extensive outreach to educate consumers about mattress recycling through its Bye Bye Mattress brand, which features a unique logo and consumer-facing website, ByeByeMattress.com. More than 2.5 million visitors have visited the website, which offers residents an easy locator tool to find their nearest mattress recycling location or event. MRC provides extensive consumer education and outreach. This includes point-of-sale materials that explain the recycling fee, public service announcements, social media campaigns, digital communications, community outreach at events and generating media coverage in local news outlets. We are fostering innovation in Rhode Island. By increasing the recyclability of used mattresses, developing new end markets for recycled mattress components, discovering better uses for the extracted materials and identifying industry best practices, we are working to reduce waste and improve recycling.
